| At the request of Somerset County Council six members of the Group walked the first section on the new West Somerset Coast Path that links the Parrett Trail at Steart to the South West Coast Path at Minehead. An early start allowed time for walkers to follow one of the short circular walks attached to the main route and so a brief visit was made to the Bridgwater Bay Nature Reserve that is renowned as bird watching location. Returning to the official start a brief stop was made to admire the ammonite mounted in a stone pillar that marks the start of the walk. The route basically follows the estuary of the River Severn on wide tracks or field paths. The nuclear power station buildings at Hinkley Point do little to improve the outlook but fortunately they are reasonably well screened from the path and it is possible to concentrate on the views over the estuary. A brief stop was made at Stolford from where a local sledge fisherman was observed as he returned with a back pannier loaded with fish. After a lunch stop at Lilstock walkers continued on their way pausing to watch a military helicopter completing some target practice on the markers a short way out into the estuary. Arriving at Kilve as previously arranged walkers joined the celebrations organised by Somerset CC to mark the opening of the new path and were the first to pass through the token gate used to hold the opening ribbon cut by Col. Luttrell. Our involvement was rewarded by a cream tea after which we continued on our way completing the short distance back to East Quantoxhead from where we had set out earlier in the day. | |
